Volvo EX30 Small SUV To Be Built in Europe

Published 27 October 2023

The EX30 is a small electric SUV that is expected to be one of Volvo’s most affordable models. It is based on a version of parent company Geely’s SEA platform, which is also used by the Polestar 2 and Lotus Eletre.

Volvo has announced it will produce its new EX30 small SUV in Europe as well as China from 2025 to increase production capacity.

The decision to build the EX30 in Europe is part of Volvo’s plan to increase its global production capacity and to reduce its reliance on China. The company is also aiming to build cars closer to where they are sold, in order to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.

The car will be produced at Volvo’s Ghent plant in Belgium, alongside the XC40 and C40 Recharge.

Design and features

Volvo’s EX30 electric SUV is a smaller sibling to the EX90, with a similar closed-off grille and Thor’s Hammer headlights. Buyers can choose from 18- to 20-inch wheels and five colours, including a new Moss Yellow inspired by Swedish lichen.

There are four nature-inspired interiors for the EX30. They blend colour-coordinated upholsteries and décor made from renewable and recycled materials. Around 30 per cent of  interior décor parts use recycled plastic, plus recycled and renewable surfaces. The EX30 is designed to have the smallest carbon footprint of any Volvo car to date.

A single 12.3-inch touchscreen display combines your driver information and favorite controls, providing you with a quick and easy way to access everything you need.

Performance and range

According to Volvo the EX30 will have a range of up to 298 miles on a single charge, with an estimated fast charging time of just under 30 minutes.

Pricing and availability

The EX30  has a starting price of £33,795. It is expected to go on sale in Europe in early 2025. Production of the EX30 started at its Zhangjiakou, China factory earlier this year, with UK deliveries set to start in early 2024.

Impact on the electric vehicle market

The EX30 is expected to be a popular choice in the European electric vehicle market. It will compete with cars such as the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV6, and Tesla Model 3.

The EX30 is also expected to help Volvo increase its sales of electric vehicles. The company is aiming to sell 1.2 million electric vehicles per year by 2025.
