QR Code Scams: A Growing Threat to UK Motorists

Published 28 August 2024

Motorists across the UK are being urged to be cautious when using QR codes to pay for parking after a surge in fraudulent scams.

Known as “quishing,” these scams involve criminals replacing legitimate QR codes on parking payment machines with their own malicious versions. When scanned, these fake codes redirect users to fraudulent websites designed to steal personal and financial information.

How the Scam Works:

  1. Fake QR Code Placement: Criminals affix fake QR codes over genuine ones on parking machines.
  2. User Interaction: Unsuspecting motorists scan the fake QR code, believing it to be legitimate.
  3. Phishing Website: The fake code leads to a fraudulent website that mimics the official parking payment platform.
  4. Information Theft: Users enter their payment details, which are captured and exploited by scammers.

Consequences of Falling Victim:

  • Financial Loss: Scammers can use stolen information to make unauthorized purchases or withdraw funds from bank accounts.
  • Parking Fines: Victims may receive parking fines if they fail to pay for parking due to the scam.

Protecting Yourself from QR Code Scams:

  • Verify QR Codes: Carefully inspect QR codes for signs of tampering, such as peeling corners or obscured information.
  • Check URLs: Ensure the URL displayed after scanning the QR code is legitimate and matches the official parking provider.
  • Avoid Suspicious Websites: Be wary of websites that look unusual or request excessive personal information.
  • Use Official Channels: Whenever possible, pay for parking using cash, card, or official mobile apps.

Call for a National Parking Platform:

The RAC has called for the introduction of a National Parking Platform to streamline parking payments and reduce the risk of scams. Such a platform would provide a standardized and secure method for motorists to pay for parking across the UK.

By remaining vigilant and aware of these scams, motorists can help protect themselves from financial loss and inconvenience.
