Save up to £1,000 by Car Sharing

Every weekday there are around 38 million seats left empty in cars on UK roads. Car sharing is the ideal way to reduce traffic congestion and free up the roads to help keep towns and cities moving. But there are financial benefits too. By car sharing, it’s possible to save up to £1,000 a year and around one tonnes of carbon dioxide.  There has never been a better time to get a new car on lease and start car sharing to help with the running costs.

Car Sharing Benefits

Car sharing benefits both the person driving and the passengers.

Everyone can share the fuel costs, or agree a mileage rate.

You can choose to car share now and again or on a regular basis.

You are not obliged to commit to lift sharing every day if you don’t want to. In fact, many sharers say they prefer to share journeys for just a few days a week and make their own travel plans on other days.

How Does Car Sharing Work?

Legally, the driver should not be making a profit from providing a lift. However, passengers can contribute an appropriate amount towards fuel costs and wear and tear to the vehicle.

The rates should be agreed in advance and the driver must not act as a taxi, picking up strangers on the way.

As it is a non-commercial agreement the driver and passengers have, then there shouldn’t be any insurance implications involved with car sharing. But if you are planning to start car sharing as a driver on a regular basis, it might be worth contacting your car insurance company to let them know, just to be on the safe side.

Finding someone to car share with

You will hopefully be able to find people to car share at your workplace.

Many places have now set up their own car share schemes to encourage employees to share lifts to and from work. But if you cannot find anyone at work to car share with, then you shouldn’t have to look too hard to find someone local to car share with you.

There are many groups across the country that link up people online in their specific locations. A good car sharing scheme will tend to have certain procedures for security checking people that sign up. They also provide information and advice for anyone who may be concerned about their safety when car sharing.

Car sharing schemes:

  • Carplus
  • Liftshare.com
  • LiftshareSolutions
  • Mylifts
  • National Car Share
  • Share a Car
  • Share a Journey

Check that the organisation you choose has a secure website, and requires members to register their personal details with them. They should also be able to give you tips on personal security. Furthermore, you can specifically request a same-sex car sharer if you wish.
